You can’t walk down a Shanghai street without seeing Art Deco – it’s in front of you, or down a lane, or maybe way up high in a Deco Echo skyscraper. It’s everywhere.
Shanghai Art Deco, an offshoot of Historic Shanghai, celebrates this style that defined modernity and progress in the early 20th century and that remains alive in our city a thousand incarnations, from architecture to graphic design to furniture, films to fashion, art to chandeliers, to objects in the home. We raise awareness of its unique place in Shanghai history, advocate for its preservation, study and research, and spread the good word via walks, talks, events and our biannual Art Deco Weekends.
In November 2015, Historic Shanghai and Shanghai Art Deco hosted the World Congress on Art Deco in Shanghai. Over 150 people from Art Deco societies around the world and close to 100 Shanghai residents attended this week-long extravaganza of walks, tours, dinners and entertainment.
